It is no coincidence that in this issue we explore three projects that represent renewal and growth in their respective areas. The sky’s the limit with a recently completed 6,000-ft-long, 100-ft-wide runway at Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The runway was rehabilitated with an unbonded concrete overlay that uses the previous asphalt runway as a base. The new runway supports the general aviation airport’s current needs, as well as future growth in support of area busi- nesses and travelers. Economic growth and increased traffic flows in Newport, KY called for some creative thinking and strategic planning. Newport, which is strategically located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers and just minutes from Cincinnati, chose concrete based on its life-cycle costs. New concrete roundabouts are playing an important role in managing an increase in traffic flow, as well as the prospect of economic development for the region. In Colorado, Brighton Boulevard is an important route between Denver International Airport and downtown Denver. So, to meet the city’s vision of a gateway to the area, the road was reconstructed with durable concrete pavement. Forward-thinking ideas led to the incorpora- tion of some nice features along this well-traveled boulevard. Brighton Boulevard stands as a gleaming example of revitalization, ready to handle new business and residential develop- ment, while also offering some attractive and welcome features to pedestrians, bicyclists, and of course, motorists. In all three projects, concrete pavements are important components in both the present and future needs of these cities and areas. How is the use of concrete making an impact in your area? We’d like to tell your story about how concrete pavements are making a positive impact in your town, city, county, or state!
