ACPA Concrete Pavement Progress Q1 2020

Concrete Pavement Progress www.acpa.org 4 THE SECOND DECADE OF THE 20TH CENTURY WERE CALLED THE ROARING TWENTIES, and al- though time will tell howwe refer to this, the second decade of the 21st century, we’re sure we’ll look back on this year (and likely the years ahead) as times that roared along at a fierce pace! ACPA staff began the year with participation in the Transportation Research Board’s 99th An- nual Meeting, World of Concrete and ConExpo-Con/Agg shows, a robust line-up of chapter workshops and other training events. At the same time, staff is rolling-out of a new committee structure and a robust workplan (that includes targeted support for our chapters), and much more! The months ahead promise to be equally exciting. For those of us who are passionate about concrete pavements, we’re always interested in stories that are exciting and interesting. In this issue of Concrete Pavement Progress, we have three stories that definitely meet that description. We start our journey with the cover story about the Williston Basin International Airport. Although any airport project can prove to be challenging, this was a true greenfield construction project that combined technology, hard-work and attention to detail to make the transition from the old airport to a new facility that will meet current and future demands. Next, we go to Longview, Washington, to examine some hexagonal concrete panels used in the city’s streets. In addition to the unconventional panel design, many of the city’s original concrete pavements are still in service and carrying traffic after almost 100 years. We also travel to Arkansas to look at a highway reconstruction project that uses concrete pave- ments on a critical section that addressed the needs of drivers of more than 48,000 vehicles that travel the 4.55 mile section of US67/167 near Little Rock Air Force Base. Also in this issue, OlsonConstruction Law, anACPAmember, provides some very interesting and useful information about avoiding the assessment of liquidated damages. BASYS Processing, also anACPAmember, writes about three important technological advances we should all knowabout. During these very busy and exciting times, we hope you’ll take the time to read this information- packed issue. For those of you who are or soon will be “roaring” down the grade with construc- tion, rehab and restoration projects, we would like to tell your story, too. Please let us know about your current and upcoming projects you’d like to see featured in Concrete Pavement Progress. These ‘20s are Roaring Along!
