American Traffic Safety Services Association 42 Chapter News Arkansas Chapter California Chapter Florida Chapter Heart of America Chapter The Arkansas-ATSSA Chapter held a short chapter meeting prior to its golf tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017. The meeting was led by former Chapter President, Spencer Stillman, Chapter Secretary and Treasurer, Cindy Williams, and Chapter Liaison, Gail Remy, who provided a presentation on ATSSA’s state government relations efforts, National Work Zone Awareness Week, The Foundation, and recent amended bylaws that were voted on by the association’s Board of Directors. The California ATSSA chapter met on Nov. 2, 2017 at Gulliver’s Restaurant in Ir vine, California. There were 45 people in attendance. Featured speakers included Steve Takigawa, deputy director of maintenance and operations for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), who provided information on future projects that resulted from the recent passing of a “road repair and accountability act” (SB 1). Takigawa indicated there will be an increase of projects, which ATSSA members will be needed to performwithin the state. Additional Caltrans officials, Randy Hiatt, who specializes in safety devices (guardrail and crash cushions), and Robert McNew, who specializes inwork zone traffic control (temporary devices), announced that Caltrans is adopting the American Association of State Highway The Florida-ATSSA Chapter met on Nov. 16, at the Plantation on Crystal River in Crystal River, Florida. There were 40 people in attendance. Featured speakers included Brian Costello, safety investor for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), who provided information on the FMCSA’s Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) ruling implementation. After Dec. 16, 2019, all drivers and carriers subject to the rule must use self-certified, registered ELDs that comply with requirements of the ELD regulations. The Heart of America (HOA)-ATSSA chapter met on Oct. 11, 2017 at 9 a.m. at the Douglas County Public Works in Lawrence, Kansas. The meeting was joined by member representation from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), and the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA). Each provided major highlights, shifts, and updates affecting the industry. Also contributing to the meeting was Tara Mays from Economic Lifelines, a “statewide coalition of organizations and community groups that provides the grassroots support for The chapter officers from2017 to 2019 include newly elected Chapter President, Seth Bleiler, of 3M-Traffic Safety and Security Division; Williams, of Time Striping, Inc.; former Secretary and Treasurer, Sherri Fryar, of Contractors Specialty Service Co.; and newly inducted Board Member Stillman, of Time Striping Inc. The next chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Wyndham Riverfront Little Rock, Little Rock, Arkansas. and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recommendation to implement Manual for Accessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards for evaluating all new permanent installations and full replacements of roadside safety hardware, and provided the Caltrans implementation schedule of MASH projects. New product approval information was also shared with members, along with pertinent resources that can be located at www.dot.ca.gov/pep/. As Nominating Chair for the California-ATSSA Chapter’s next board election, Tony Becker, announced that the chapter will be seeking a president-elect and seven directors to begin serving after the April 2018 chapter meeting. Javie Rojas and CarolinaMcMoran, of Valencia College’s Vocational Vehicle Technology program, shared how the accelerated training program has created opportunity for economic advancement within central Florida by training unemployed individuals. Fred Bergstesser, the government account manager for Royal Truck & Equipment, delivered an insightful presentation on the future of highway safety and Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs). Mays provided highlights of Economic Lifelines and discussed how both HOA-ATSSA and Economic Lifelines could help each other. Collaborative talks are now underway among the HOA-ATSSA Chapter, ATSSA’s Director of State Government Relations, Ashley Wieland, and Economic Lifelines to ensure the collaborative message and goals are collectively heard by Kansas state legislature.
