American Traffic Safety Services Association 12 ATSSA acknowledges industry excellence During the 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo and the Legislative Fly-In in 2019, ATSSA awarded the following individ- uals, students, and member companies for their contributions to transportation and roadway safety. Sue Reiss won the Industry Achievement Award . She was nominated by Greg Hannah from Impact Recovery Systems. The Innovation Awards first-place winner was Solar Ad- vancedWarning Systems, Inc. with their Solar AdvancedWarn- ing System device that is designed to minimize incidents on construction haul roads and intersection crossings. ScottMcCannaof theOregonDepartment of Transportationwon the National Safety Award . He was nominated by Steve Kite. The InnovationAwards second-placewinner was Traffic Pro Beds with their Traffic Pro Bed product, that is a redesign of a truck bed that is safer in traffic control situations. DavidMcGee, senior reporter fromtheBristol HeraldCourier, won the NationalMediaAward . Hewas nominatedbyMichelle Earl (Pictured) from the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Innovation Awards third-place winner was TAPCO for their connected vehicle interface, which communicates with smart city roadside units to relay intelligent warning system activation, providing drivers with instant vehicle alerts. TCD Challenge : Student winners from ATSSA/TRB’s Traffic Control Device Challenge presented their roadway safety in- novations to ATSSA members during the 49th Annual Con- vention & Traffic Expo. ATSSA presented Rep. Diaz-Balart ’s Roadway Safety Champion Award to a member of his staff during the Leg- islative Fly-In.
