7 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon  |  www.plso.org From the PLSO Office Manual (both of these are available for all members to read at www.plso.org/ mbrresources) . As each new Board member takes their seat, they are asked to comply with the following expectations: 1. Attend and prepare for boardmeetings. Attendance and preparation are expect- ed for the Board to function effectively. In order to conduct business and vote on matters of concern, a quorum of 50% of the Board is required. Board members unable to attend should find a qualified replacement. Board material, especial- ly regarding changes to fiscal and policy matters, shall be submitted two weeks prior to a meeting to give members the opportunity to study and review prior to attending. Material submitted after the two-week period will only be accepted upon unanimous consent. 2. Provide fiduciary oversight. The Board is expected to review and approve op- erating budgets, and activities that were not originally included when approved. 3. Provide ongoing strategic counsel and advice. Board members need to make themselves easily accessible to the Executive Secretary, Executive Commit- tee, PLSO Lobbyist, Committee Chairs, and Liaisons for feedback. 4. Connect PLSO to others who can be helpful to the community. Board mem- bers should expect to be asked to identify, provide information about, and helpmake connections with other potential mem- bers and community allies. 5. Support PLSO Fundraising Efforts. The Board should support efforts to raisemon - ey for education and outreach activities, whether it’s donating money, items, or time to the Annual Auction. 6. Serve on and occasionally lead board task forces or committees. Ideally, each Board member will serve on at least one committee or task force. 7. Communicate Board Activities to Chap- ter. Chapters areexpected toholdmeetings and appropriately communicate Board activities to members. 8. When serving on the Board, you are the voice of the Board. Disagreements and lengthy discussions in Boardmeetings are normal. Showing appropriate respect and following Roberts Rule is expected. Once a motion has officially been voted on, the Board speaks with one unified voice on that particular matter, despite what an in- dividual member’s vote was on the topic. 9. Communicate Board Activities to Chap- ter. Chapters areexpected toholdmeetings and appropriately communicate Board activities to the members. 10. Keep Membership Current. You can - not serve if your membership isn’t current. TheBoard is expected to renew theirmem- bership on time by July 1. This year’s Chairman, Jeremy Sherer, has a few goals he’s working towards that support PLSO’s Strategic Plan (more in- formation may be found at www.plso. org/Strategic-Planning). The Board and our Committees are integral in making it all happen. Right now, he is asking peo- ple to consider the following: What does a good surveyor look like? What does professional excellence look like? What does a quality member look like? If you have clear responses to these questions, which you would like to submit, please feel free to contact Chairman Sherer and let him know.  x
