All Rights Reserved IT WILL COME AS NO SURPRISE that California’s hospitality is in the midst of an unprecedented and tumultuous period. We all know colleagues who have shuttered hotels, we have all felt the pain of furloughing staff, we have all experienced anxiety with rapidly changing operational guidelines. So, the question becomes, what can we do to fix it—and how can we work together to build our industry beyond our peak in 2019? Travel demand has been reshaped by the pandemic. Room demand in many markets was once primarily driven by group and business travel, but now leisure travel is the dominant segment. Recent forecasts indicate global business travel will not fully recover until 2024, while leisure travel in some regions is topping 2019 levels. As hoteliers, we need to redefine how we view travel and adapt to provide travelers with the experiences they are coming to expect in the era of remote work. A traveler’s experience does not start at the entrance of your hotel—it encompasses their entire trip from start to finish. It begins with either the flight from the airport or the road trip to your establishment. It continues as your guests explore the restaurants, retail, and attractions that make your destination unique. Finally, it ends each night at your hotel. While hoteliers focus heavily on shaping a traveler’s experience in the hotel, it is just as important that we have a role in helping shape their entire experience in our community. Our state’s hospitality industry has been subject to a range of issues over the past few years, with homelessness and criminal activity being two of the largest. That combined with significant staffing challenges and, in many cases, exceedingly onerous local legislation. Now is our time to be involved in the conversations which will help shape our communities for the better. We have an opportunity to help guide policy decisions which will revitalize communities and restore travel to their pre-pandemic levels. Over the coming year, CHLA will call on you to advocate for our industry—I ask you to respond to the call and encourage your fellow hoteliers to do so as well. When compared to other industries, the U.S. hospitality industry has one of the lowest responses to advocacy efforts. I have confidence that we can change that for California—I am calling on you to step up when you see things that need to be done. Get active in local and state politics, respond to CHLA’s calls to action, and use your voice to protect your interests and our industry. CHLA works on behalf of all California’s hoteliers. If you have an issue, please call us. If you hear us ask for your voice, please respond knowing that it is to protect your hotel, your employees, and your livelihood. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the 2022 Chair of the California Hotel & Lodging Association’s Board of Directors. We have a passionate group of leaders at CHLA who are all working diligently to help California’s hospitality industry recover, rehire, and thrive. Thank you for your membership and involvement!  MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Tom Patton CHLA Chair

4 CALIFORNIA LODGING NEWS www.calodging.com JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square’s Distance-Learning Hub ON LINED PAPER WITH LOTS of “hearts” drawn at the bottom of a thank you note, a grade-school student’s words crystallized the impact of JWMarriott San Francisco Union Square’s distance-learning hub during the heart of the COVID-19 outbreak: “This year is a big bummer, but everything is better when I come here.” Midway through 2020, San Francisco was in complete lockdown and schools had pivoted to remote learning. The JWMarriott, centrally located between the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood and its iconic Chinatown, reached out to the San Francisco Department of Children and Families to ask if they could use the hotel’s conference rooms for remote learning. The location, SFDCF said, was perfect for the community, providing a safe space for grade-school children to obtain the assistance they needed for learning. Incredibly timely for the classroom hub to function was the hotel’s adherence to cleaning and safety standards established by city, state, and federal health officials that Marriott was implementing well before regulatory rules were written. “It was so important that we could ensure the health and safety of neighborhood children when they needed our help the most,” said John Anderson, General Manager of the JWMarriot. The available space was just the start of almost a year-long community partnership supporting third, fourth, and fifth graders: • The culinary team insisted on providing meals, developing daily menus for breakfast, lunch and snacks, and volunteering to teach cooking and nutrition classes once a week. • The seamstresses made cloth masks in child and adult sizes, totaling more than 4,000 that were donated to the remote learning hub and several nearby community benefit organizations. • Hotel technicians ensured internet connections were “three bars” so that teachers and students had seamless connectivity for classroom hub and remote access. The appreciation resonated from those who gained the most—the students: • “Thank you, JWMarriot, for the food. I hope the food is always going to be this good.” • “Thank you for making sure we have what we need.” • “You guys are amazing and wonderful because you let us use your hotel.” San Francisco’s establishment noticed, too. Board of Supervisors member Aaron Peskin wrote in his Certificate of Honor for the JW Marriott: “In honor of your outstanding service in providing a space to host community learning hubs for students who were mostly impacted during the pandemic, your commitment to organizing essential resources such as food and masks, and for proactively responding to the needs of the most vulnerable students, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors hereby extends its highest commendation.” Although the recognition was welcomed, GM Anderson summed up the effort best: “This is why we are hoteliers. This is why we are San Franciscans. It’s just what we do.”  “You guys are amazing and wonderful because you let us use your hotel.”

6 CALIFORNIA LODGING NEWS www.calodging.com WE’VE ALL HEARD THE PHRASE “consumers vote with their wallets,” but many hotels forget that they too can shape the industries that help them run. Indeed, hospitality professionals exert outsized purchasing power because, regardless of whether you run a hotel, motel, or small CABBI inn, your business is akin to a small city. With that purchasing power comes the ability to call for designs, technologies, and programs that better fit your business’s needs. In the world of consumables, this means that hotels have the ability to drive changes which increase efficiencies, decrease waste, reduce overall costs, or simply fit better with the unique and welcoming atmosphere you work so hard to cultivate. While our businesses are becoming more eco-friendly than ever, we still consume our fair share of single use products in our day-to-day business (think soaps, cleaning materials, and even trash bags). As hotels have adapted to new regulations, so too have businesses that support hotel operations. In response to increased demand for products compatible with shower dispensers following California’s plastic bottle ban, shower product manufacturers have increased the number of soaps, lotions, and lathers that can be used with large dispensers. In response to hoteliers’ need for a way to convey amenities to guests in a pandemic-friendly manner, manufacturers designed automated robots to keep guests safe (while these designs were already in the works, the pandemic helped increase the prevalence of these technologies). In response to unpleasant odors which develop when trash is left sitting, manufacturers developed odor locking trash bags. All of these innovations originated as ideas to address an issue and were eventually backed by an industry who saw the benefits of each design. Further, in each of these cases, hoteliers demanded solutions to problems and voted to solve the issue by purchasing these products. Demand Directs Development How Hotels Can Use Their Existing Purchasing Power to Spur Cost-Saving Development By John Brady, Founder of Noslipbags.com

www.calodging.com January/February 2022 7 continues  What Does This Mean for Your Business? Given their outsized impact on commercial commodity production, hotels are in a unique position to use their purchasing power to influence designs and save time, save money, and reduce waste. For example, by switching to a wall dispenser for soaps, hotels can save an estimated $10,512 per year in operational costs and reduce the amount of bottles in landfills by up to 200 bottles per refill. In the case of robots, some companies estimate that using robots in the workplace can increase customer satisfaction so much that using a robot in a hotel can pay itself off in 2–3 months based solely on increased guest review scores. So, it’s clear that leveraging your business’s purchasing power pays off, but how can you get started? First, look for issues that shouldn’t merely be there. Does your door open too often automatically and let out warm air unnecessarily? Are there little things you can do to make the guest experience more welcoming or efficient? Do your staff struggle with trash bags that do not fit properly in your trash cans, forcing them to take time to try to tie them off and spend more time later cleaning up the mess after they inevitably slip? Once you’ve identified your problems, start looking for potential solutions. Look for existing suppliers who have addressed the issues, but don’t ignore small innovators who are just starting out as sometimes, it takes a new perspective to address lingering problems. Explore potential “life-hacks” which can help with the issue, but beware of those which can make processes slower, dangerous, or more difficult in the long run. Finally, look for products which keep it simple and do one or two tasks well, rather than products which offer to solve all of your problems, but end up doing so poorly. Sometimes, this search can be time consuming, but, as noted earlier, the sheer scale of hospitality operations can make a small initial effort pay off significantly in the long term.  Noslipbags.com is a startup company which has designed cinchable trash bags for commercial use. These bags are designed to reduce installation time, create a cleaner look when installed in trash cans, and to help ensure a no-slip experience to make removal quick and easy for staff. To learn more about this product and how you can help use your purchasing power to get it into your trash cans, contact John Brady at jbrady@noslipbags.com. Look for products which keep it simple and do one or two tasks well, rather than products which offer to solve all of your problems, but end up doing so poorly.
