GDA Action October 2021

46 • October 2021 GDAMEMBERPROFILE When and how did you become a GDA member? Through my involvement with ASDA, I realized how significant a role the GDA plays in our profession. While in school, I served as ASDA Lunch and Learn chair and knew I would obtain membership in the GDA following graduation. Why is being part of a professional group important? It is important to me to be part of a team that will provide accountability and support throughout my career. After this past year, I think we have all realized how crucial it is to have people to depend on in your time of need. Teamwork makes the dream work. What is your most memorable GDA experience? I will never forget participating in GMOM as a dental student. The knowledge I gained as I worked alongside multiple experienced dentists was invaluable but, more than that, it was immensely inspiring to witness dentists from all over the state come together in one building and work as one team to serve as many patients as they could. What advice would you give to an aspiring dental student? If at all possible, work or volunteer as a dental assistant. It’s truly invaluable. What did you want to be when you were growing up? I’ve actually wanted to be a dentist since I was about 12 years old. I was always very curious about all of the instruments and had to have quite a bit of dental work done at a young age. As I got older, I continued to be intrigued and formed a wonderful relationship with my dentists. After shadowing and then working as an assistant at the practice I grew up going to, I knew this was the job for me. What was your first job? A carpenter’s assistant would be the technical term. My dad builds houses as an independent contractor and I grew up going to work with him when he needed extra help on the weekends and during the summer. Once I was able to actually speed things up for him, I was put on the payroll. I learned so much from him and would not trade those days for anything. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? My husband and I have two incredible dogs named Luna and Tonks. They are the center of our world and take up pretty much all of our spare time. Other than spending time with them, I enjoy riding my Peloton bike and spending time with my mom and sister. Without saying, “I am a dentist,” what would you say if someone asked what you do? I show people how to achieve and maintain a healthy mouth! This column highlights GDA members talking about their path to dentistry and the value they find in GDA membership. This month we hear from Southwest District member Dr. Andrea Vita, a general dentist who practices at American Dental of Fitzgerald in Fitzgerald, GA. Meet Dr. Andrea Vita
