Thursday, June 7 h , une 1  Workshops  Lectures Thomas Viola, Cont. COURSE DESCRIPTION The challenge faced by all clinicians today is to provide safe and effective dental treatment to our medically complex patients. Thus, as dental profes- sionals, we must be equally aware of the medical considerations of agents commonly used in the practice of dentistry as well as the dental considerations of the medications frequently prescribed for the treatment of multiple systemic diseases. This program will present an overview of the basic principles of pharma- cology in a format which makes it applicable, practical and useful for all members of the dental team. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to drugs administered or prescribed in dental practice, as well as to medications whose actions, effects, or interactions with other drugs may impact dental therapy. OBJECTIVES • Describe the pharmacology of analgesics and appropriate prescribing practices for the management of acute dental pain • Discuss local anesthetic agents with respect to their mechanism of action, adverse effects and contraindications • Examine the pharmacology of anti-infective agents commonly used in dentistry and their clinical considerations • Discuss the prescription medications and nonprescription drugs and supplements most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history, including their potential impact on dental therapy and patient care planning Thomas Viola, Cont. PRESENTATION “Hurts So... Swell!”Management of Dental Pain and Appropriate Opioid Prescribing Practices 1–4pm, Thursday 6/17 LOCATION: BRAZOS TYPE: LECTURE CEU: 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates both opioid and non-opioid analge- sics. However, moderate to severe dental pain often occurs well after office hours and away from our immediate supervision. Thus, it is critical for cli- nicians to be able to accurately identify a patient’s need for pain control, develop an individualized pain management plan, and assess the efficacy of analgesic agents employed. This program will provide strategies for effectively managing dental pain with opioid and non-opioid analgesics and analgesic adjuvants, while also mitigat- ing associated risks. Special emphasis will be given to appropriate practices for prescribing analgesics as well as identification and treatment of opioid analgesic abuse. OBJECTIVES • Understand the pharmacology and mechanism of action of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, as well as their potential for abuse • Identify the intended roles of these analgesics in the treatment of acute dental pain, as well as situations which may preclude their use • Discuss best practices for prescribing opioid analgesics as part of an individualized patient pain management plan • Describe techniques useful in recognizing and identifying potential addiction as well as avoiding potential drug diversion • Learn current protocols for the management and treatment of opioid addiction • Examine guidelines for proper storage and disposal of unused dosages NMDA is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.
