Thursday, June 7 Thursday, May 18  Ticketed Events/Workshops  Special Events  Lectures A Review of Mucosal Soft Tissue Pathology for the Practicing Dentist and Dental Hygienist 9a–12p, Thursday 5/18 LOCATION: 215/SAN MIGUEL-235/MESILLA TYPE: LECTURE CEU: 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The course will review the most common infections of the oral mucosa and their therapeutic management, including herpes and candidal infections. It will also review the most common noninfectious forms of stomatitis and their therapeutic management, including geographic tongue, lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid, allergy and aphthous ulcers. Lastly the most common soft tissue lumps and bumps seen in practice will be reviewed and illustrated. OBJECTIVES • Be able to recognize and treat the most common oral mucosal infections. • Be able to recognize and treat the most common forms of noninfectious stomatitis. • Be able to recognize and develop a differential diagnosis for mucosal swellings. John M. Wright Dr. John M. Wright is Regents Professor, Department of Diagnostic Sciences, Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. He is an oral pathologist and a Diplomate of both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. He received his dental degree from West Virginia University and oral pathology training at Indiana University. He has contributed over 180 publications to the scientific literature, as well as 25 book chapters and five textbooks. Dr. Wright is a past President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the International Association of Oral Pathologists. Dr. Wright was a member of the working group who produced the current WHO classification of tumors of the oral regions. He is also a co-editor working on the next AFIP fascicle series on head and neck pathology. Dr. Wright has given over 400 invited lectures statewide, nationally and internationally. Open Wide and Get Some Sleep: Relationships Between Dentistry and Sleep Disorders 1–4p, Thursday 5/18 LOCATION: 215/SAN MIGUEL-235/MESILLA TYPE: LECTURE CEU: 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION This seminar will focus on the evaluation and management of several sleep disorders from a dental medicine perspective. Although sleep disorders including sleep apnea are typically diagnosed by a sleep medicine physician, dentists roles include identifying oral and physical exam findings, as well as clinical symptoms that may prompt further screening and/or referral for OSA and sleep-related movement disorders. We will review indications to refer to other health professionals, indications for oral appliance therapy, as well as characteristics that can influence oral appliance effectiveness in managing OSA. OBJECTIVES • Identify risk factors and clinical findings that may increase your suspicion of a patient having sleep disorder. • Learn how to screen patients for obstructive sleep apnea, sleep related bruxism, and restless leg syndrome. • Learn about different oral mandibular advancement devices to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Shanna Diaz Shanna Diaz completed a BA in Psychology at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. She subsequently completed her residency in General Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico and practiced psychiatry across New Mexico during consecutive fellowships in Geriatric Psychiatry followed by Sleep Medicine, at the University of New Mexico. Throughout her training, Dr. Diaz became increasingly aware that disturbed sleep contributes to myriad medical and mental health disorders. She was compelled to pursue a fellowship in sleep medicine during her exploration of ways to address delirium and insomnia in the geriatric population and has often quipped that she loves improving lives by prescribing air. She strives to promote wellness rather than treat illness by helping others prioritize and optimize their sleep to improve physical and mental health. Dr. Diaz enthusiastically teaches a wide range of topics to a broad and varied audiences. From patients, to learners at different points in their medical training, from people in our community, to healthcare workers across the country who participate in various Project ECHOs (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) programs, Dr. Diaz is passionate about empowering others to use newly acquired knowledge to help themselves and others improve their quality of lives.
