They assist my drivers and keep them and others on the road safer. They improve my bottom line by improving efficiency. There is no argument that our vehicles are getting “smarter” and we’ll need to keep up—unless we want a Terminator/Skynet situation. You can call me old-fashioned, but I like the idea of human interaction. Trucking is about building relationships—with customers, employees, vendors, etc. A lot of drivers enjoy being out in the world, seeing new things and meeting new people. That’s part of being human— curiosity. While it supposedly can kill a cat, it often leads us to discover new ways of doing things and can inspire the next big idea. If we, as OTA members and active participants in our industry, can be part of the conversation and have our own input into the technology that’s being pursued, we’ll likely get more things that we can and want to invest in. Only time will tell if autonomous trucks or some proposed gadget or gizmo will be our industry’s Ford Edsel or New Coke!
