We understand the number of communities and industries that rely on trucks to keep things moving. We’re also fully aware of the costs involved, which forever seem to be on an upward trend. The sheer magnitude of what trucking represents in the United States is easy to overlook, and it often is, by the public and the media. With trucking’s status quo now on the precipice of change (in many ways), below are some key numbers* to keep on hand as discussions heat up about the increased burden trucking is expected to carry. This is a snapshot of the reality that we work in every day and keep in mind that Oregon is already to most expensive state in which to operate a truck. REVENUE $732.3 billion in gross freight revenues (primary shipments only) from trucking, representing 80.4% of the nation’s freight bill in 2020. TONNAGE 10.23 billion tons of freight (primary shipments only) transported by trucks in 2020, representing 72.5% of total domestic tonnage shipped. MILEAGE 300.05 billion miles traveled by all registered trucks in 2019. 175.3 billion miles traveled by combination trucks in 2019. TAXES $48.6 billion paid by commercial trucks in federal and state highway-user taxes in 2019. 24.4¢ in federal fuel tax paid for each gallon of diesel fuel as of January, 2021. 18.4¢ in federal fuel tax paid for each gallon of gasoline as of January, 2021. 30.3¢ paid on average in state fuel tax for each gallon of diesel fuel as of January, 2021. 28.5¢ paid on average in state fuel tax for each gallon of gasoline as of January, 2021. Commercial trucks paid $19.3 billion in federal highway-user taxes.
