PLSO The Oregon Surveyor May/June 2021

14 The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 44, No. 3 Featured Article Mapping on the Trail Route mapping on the Lewis and Clark expedition By Ralph Ehrenberg Editor's Note: PLSOmember Dick Bryant let us know that he had always been curious about how the Voyage of Discovery was mapped. He found this interesting article by Googling “edgate.commapping the trail.” There were some pretty talented surveyors back in the day, he said, when you consider the tools they had to work with. After a bit of detective work given the year the article was originally published (2000), we received permission to reprint the article from the Smithsonian, which owns the rights to the text of the article. For those who may be interested in learning more, the article appears to be an excerpt from Ralph Ehrenberg’s book, “Scholars’ Guide to Washington, D.C. for Cartography and Remote Sensing Imagery,” published in 1987 by the Smithsonian Institution Press. The images and maps from the original article were not possible to reproduce, but we found a similar map.
