VAA Annual Report 2022

VAA NEWS 2022 was a great year for the Women of Asphalt Virginia Branch! After forming in 2021, the VA branch quickly became the largest within the WofA organization. Plans are forming to continue that growth and reach as many women in the Virginia asphalt industry as possible. Throughout 2022, WofA Virginia had the opportunity to partner with VAA member companies in specific regions to host receptions attracting local women. These receptions connected women with the branch and other women in the industry. The Roanoke reception took place in March and was hosted by Associated Asphalt. The Norfolk reception took place in April and was WOMEN OF ASPHALT VIRGINIA BRANCH sponsored by Virginia Paving Company. Both were great events, and the ladies loved connecting in a social atmosphere and learning more about Women of Asphalt. The branch also hosted a virtual meet-up in June featuring Cathy McGhee, Chief Deputy Commissioner of VDOT. She spoke on her journey as a woman in the industry and what she has overcome to reach her current leadership position. It was truly inspiring, and the branch hopes to continue providing a platform for Virginia asphalt industry women to share their stories and insight. As part of its mission, the Virginia branch participated in charitable events and had a blast supporting the 12th Annual Pumpkin for Kids event in October, benefiting the VCU Children's Hospital. The unique hot pink WofA pumpkin didn't win the official contest, but it was donated to the hospital with hopes that young girls might be inspired to consider the asphalt industry as an industry they can join in the future. The year was capped by the annual Mid-Atlantic Asphalt Expo & Conference. The WofA Virginia "hot pink" booth is always a hit on the tradeshow floor, and the photo booth made it even more popular. Attendees had a blast getting their photos taken and having a bit of fun. The branch also hosted a luncheon during the conference, and the turnout was great. WofA Virginia is planning an exciting 2023 with events and networking. Onward and Upward!
