VAA Virginia Asphalt Fall/Winter 2022

VAASPHALT.ORG 29 OCTOBERFEST: A MULTI-DAY INDUSTRY GATHERING the Appomattox Bypass (See “The Award Winning US460” on page 12). After lunch, Kevin Gregg, VDOT Chief of Maintenance and Operations, and Kerry Bates made presentations about what industry leaders can expect from the coming years, including e-Construction. The floor was open for VAA and VDOT participants to address issues and ask questions common to both organizations. At the conclusion of the Discussion with the Department, VAA hosted a cocktail reception for attendees, who were then free to continue building relationships in and beyond the resort. The beautiful backdrop of historic Williamsburg offered participants a chance to explore and connect over dinner or drinks as the evening continued. The final day marked the first annual Asphalt Open, a golf tournament benefiting the R.J. Schreck Scholarship Fund. This event is the first consolidated golf tournament, after years of three regional tournaments hosted each year across Richmond, Tidewater and Northern Virginia, each accommodating between 50 to 80 golfers. In 2021, the golf committee began preparations for one statewide event to align with the 2022 VAA Octoberfest. The golfers set out under gorgeous, sunny skies after check-in, breakfast and a shotgun start. Over 130 golfers teed off on the famed championship River Course, which has hosted the world’s best players on both Professional Golf Association and Ladies Professional Golf Association tours. Generous sponsors represented each of the eighteen holes of the course as well as other amenities of the tournament. VAA would like to personally thank the official tournament sponsors, including Carter Machinery; Rutherfoord, a Marsh & McLennan Agency; Asphalt Emulsion Industries; Irving Oil; James River Equipment; Luck Stone and Associated Asphalt for their generous contributions. All proceeds benefited the Richard J. Schreck Scholarship fund, which assists dependents of VAA members in furthering their education beyond high school. VAA was thrilled with the turnout and support, which raised approximately $41,000. At the tournament’s close, the Golf Committee and VAA shared their thanks with all the sponsors, VAA members and clients who came out in support of this year’s event, and their hope of continuing to expand this charitable tournament in the future. VAA is already planning the 2023 Octoberfest events and looks forward to an even brighter future for its attendees. The VAA takes pride in planning and hosting events such as these to bring members, industry partners, the Virginia Department of Transportation and government officials together to foster relationships and promote forward-thinking discussions. △ continued from page 27
