VAA Virginia Asphalt Fall/Winter 2023

OCTOBERFEST VAA’S THREE-DAY FALL EVENT winners will formally receive plaques and canvas awards at the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Asphalt Expo & Conference. The 2022 Asphalt Pavement Alliance’s Perpetual Pavement Awards (PPA) were also announced during Octoberfest. VAA President Trenton Clark presented the PPA: By Performance to Ken King, VDOT Salem District Engineer, for VDOT’s I-81 Mongomery County MP109.8 to 111.8 segment. The award plaques for this honor were also presented to VDOT and Allan Myers. Next, the PPA: By Design award was presented to Chris Hall, VDOT Hampton Roads District Engineer, for VDOT’s work on the I-64 Widening and Reconstruction Segment II project. The award plaques for this honor were given to VDOT and Slurry Pavers, Inc. After a celebratory lunch, the meeting resumed with a panel discussion moderated by Cathy McGhee, VDOT Chief Deputy Commissioner. This panel consisted of four VDOT District Engineers: Dale Totten, D.E. of Richmond; Sean Nelson, D.E. of Culpeper; Ken King, D.E. of Salem; and Chris Hall, D.E. of Hampton Roads. Afterward, VDOT State Maintenance Engineer Robbie Prezioso and VDOT Assistant State Maintenance Engineer Rob Crandol talked about what to expect in the upcoming years regarding paving schedules, pavement performance, and specifically 2024 schedule funding. Following these presentations, the floor was opened for VDOT and VAA participants to continue asking questions and addressing concerns. After the Discussion with the Department meeting was adjourned, the association held a cocktail reception, also open to attendees of the Asphalt Open golf tournament to commence the following day. This provided another opportunity for attendees of all disciplines to gather and network with one another. The VAA Asphalt Open teed off on the final day of Octoberfest. Golfers checked in and enjoyed breakfast in the clubhouse, preparing for a beautiful day of golf. There they could also purchase raffle tickets to win one of two foursomes for the River Course donated by Kingsmill Resort, as well as grab the Open’s giveaway item: a golf towel featuring the top-level sponsor logos. The shotgun start was at 9:00 am for the 125 golfers on the famous River Course, which has played host to the world’s best players on PGA and LPGA tours. Each hole on the River Course featured two sponsor companies, and golfers enjoyed other amenities provided by sponsors throughout the open. All proceeds benefitted the Richard J. Schreck Scholarship fund, which assists dependents of VAA members with educational ambitions after high school. The Golf Committee and VAA would like to personally thank all the sponsors who supported this tournament and look forward to an even bigger open in the future! We would also like to congratulate the winners of the 2023 VAA Asphalt Open Tournament: Team Martin Marietta, including Lance Price, Caroline Cahill, Aaron McCullough, and Nichole Inkel, with a score of 52. We hope to see more attendees at the Discussion with the Department and the Asphalt Open Tournament next year. Plans are already underway for 2024, so keep your eyes and ears open for future details!
