American Traffic Safety Services Association 38 TheArizonaATSSAChapter(AZ-ATSSA)metattheArizonaDepartment of Transportation (ADOT) in Phoenix on June 18. The chapter reflected on John Ledbetter, Sr., who passed away on May 7. Ledbetter was an industry icon who served at ATSSA’s national and chapter levels. Hewas instrumental in helping develop traffic control training and believed in safety first for his employees. Ledbetter will be missed by many. Jesus Nunez of Trafficade provided an update on his experiences withattendingATSSA’s LeadershipProgramandLegislativeBriefing & Fly-in, which exceeded his expectations. The chapter sponsors amember annually to attend the fly-in. Members are encouraged to speak with a board member if interested in attending. The Heart of America ATSSA (HOA-ATSSA) Chapter meeting had 15 member companies and seven public agencies in attendance. The guest speakers were from Douglas County Public Works in Lawrence. DanWatkins of Economic Lifelines andMichael White of the Kansas Contractors Association gave updates about their respective organizations, noting common interests and the need for continued grassroot efforts. From the Federal government’s perspective, DavidLaRocheof the Federal HighwayAdministration (FHWA) providedanupdate. RandyBarthof 3Mpresenteda report The City of Mesa will hold several events in October including hosting The ATSS FoundationMemorial. The city will provide the chapter with a tabletop exhibit to educate the public on traffic control devices and participate in a workshop to highlight road- way safety training programs designed to keep employees safe. The chapter is seeking volunteers to participate in these events as a representative of AZ-ATSSA. The following elected positions for the AZ-ATSSA Board were announced: BillyMontgomery, president-elect; Carlos De La Vara, director; and Greg Van Dine, director. Ron Jones was honored for serving as chapter president from 2017 to 2019. Heart of America Chapter Chapter News ATSSA chapters met across the United States to discuss area and industry initiatives. ATSSA staff participated in 74 chapter meetings to update members on the association’s initiatives including ATSSA’s State Government Relations program, The ATSS Foundation programs and events, and ATSSA events, such as ATSSA’s Legislative Briefing & Fly-in and National Work Zone Aware- ness Week. Eric Nichol, Jeff Henry, and Jonny Madrid of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) gave updates on personnel, funding allo- cation plans, and roadway requirements expected of work zone crews. HOA-ATSSA Chapter President Brad Henry reminded members of the need for volunteers and sponsors to support the upcoming annual Summer Spectacular chapter meeting, to be hosted in Old Kinderhook in the fall.
