American Traffic Safety Services Association 42 Hosting NWZAW fulfills goal Michigan chapter long sought to host work zone safety kick-off event Michigan Chapter President Jamie Lemkewaspleasedtohavehishomestate organizing the kickoff of National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW). “We have been interested in hosting the NWZAWkickoffevent formany years and are very proud to be selected to host in 2020,”hesaid. “Webelievethekickoffevent is very effective at providing awareness about work zone safety and hosting it on a national scale gives it evenmore prom - inence withinMichigan.” After months of planning led by Chuck Bergmann, a chapter member and work zone technical specialistwith theMichigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Lemke said they expected more than 800 people to attend the April 21 event. He serves as president of Give ‘Em A Brake Safety in Grandville, Mich., whichwas startedbyhisuncle, Dan Babcock. Babcock is well-known in the roadway safety infrastructure industry for his success in improving work zone safety and has served in several ATSSA leader - ship roles during his career, Lemke said. Lemke grew up working for his uncle’s business, starting at age 15 and continu - ing during summers and holiday breaks until he graduated fromcollege andwent toworkasacertifiedpublicaccountant for Deloitte. But he said the business left an impact andhe recently returned full-time.
