OHCA Oregon Caregiver Spring Summer 2020

The Oregon Caregiver SPRING/SUMMER 2020 www.ohca.com 20 DATA & RESEARCH those who need it most may be lost in all the news stories and social media posts that tend to focus on anecdotal examples. Most Oregon providers are not experiencing mass call outs of staff or seeing large decreases in their census. Oregon’s long term care providers continue to deliver services to the most vulnerable members of society who need care and supports— just as they do at any other time. For visual context, see Figure 1, a pie chart depicting the number of licensed facilities with confirmed cases as a percentage of all Oregon licensed facilities. The trend over time is another way of contextualizing the impact of this crisis. Figure 2 visualizes the number of licensed facilities with confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic com- pared to the total number of licensed facilities offers this contextualization. Knowing where we have been and where we are now provides the data (and context) that is needed to inform decision making on next steps in the fight against the virus. Final Thoughts Long term care providers are at the front line of this outbreak. They need the resources and support to continue to provide the care of our society’s most vulnerable during these challenging times. Data and accurate information are essential resources that providers need to be able to do their job: provide care to our most vulnerable.
