SAFETY PROFESSIONAL (LARGE) Bob Shinn SAFETY PROFESSIONAL (SMALL) Christie Wuerst EVEN THROUGH A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, wildfire crisis, and a last-minute venue change, OTA still managed to host its annual safety-focused event in Eugene! It was a different aura this year with 80 attendees in the socially distanced space, complete with masks, plenty of sanitizer, and even some virtually live-streamed presentations. It’s a reminder that trucking doesn’t stop and neither does safety. Some of our topics this year included sleep apnea, active shooter awareness, load securement, carrier’s responsibility for injured contract drivers, preventing harassment, drone usage in accident investigation, and professional development—plus updates from OTA on the state of the association and upcoming legislature, Oregon OSHA, ODOT, and FMCSA on the Clearinghouse rules. We’d like to send a special shout-out to Jennifer King with WHA Insurance for her continued volunteerism in putting this event together—thank you! One of the highlights at the event was our 2020 Annual Fleet Safety Awards Dinner. Nominees were divided into categories based on fleet size and type and were selected on criteria such as maintaining an accident free record compared to number of miles traveled and playing a critical role in contributing to safety efforts within their company and the industry as a whole. These companies and individuals have made large strides in developing their safety departments, and it shows! Congratulations to all the following winners!
