PLSO Oregon Surveyor Nov/Dec 2019

10 The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 42, No. 6 2020 Annual Conference Support the Future of Surveying At the 2020 Education & Outreach Auction Are you willing to give a little, in order to get where we need to go? T he future of surveying is a long open road, heading for the hori- zon. You know there is a bend or two in it, but the further you go, you still just can’t see any end to it yet, and with any luck, there is a destination. The road is always there, no matter where you pause for a view, whether stopping for gas, or even stalled to wait for a tow truck. Either way, you need to give a little to get where you need to go —whether it’s money for gas, volunteer- ing to be the driver or sitting shotgun to read the map, it doesn’t matter. It’s all important if we want to get where we need to go. The PLSO auction is a great opportunity for individuals, chapters and vendors to support two special PLSO programs that focus on the future of surveying: Schol- arship Awards and Outreach Activities. The primary funding for both programs comes from the success of the Educa- tion & Outreach Auction, next scheduled for January 23, 2020 during the annu- al conference at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. Auction proceeds for the scholarship fund are added to the PLSO scholarship account, which is managed by the Ore- gon Community Foundation. Outreach funds are used by PLSO to promote the land surveying profession to our future workforce and educate the public about us and what we do. In the past, funds have paid for activities such as updating promotional materials and the website, creating public information displays, at- tending college and career fairs, Oregon Tech Geomatics Club sponsorship, and supporting the Oregon Young Survey- ors Network. You can help build the future of our surveying profession in three ways: 1. Attend Attend the Education & Outreach auction event and bid on items donated by your professional colleagues. You may register to attend through PLSO Conference Registration, where Auction Dinner tickets only are also available. Go to plso.org/ Conference. 2. Donate Donate a quality item to the Auction. Go to plso.org/ Education-&-Outreach for ideas and to download a form, which should be sent as an attachment to Auction Chairman Gary Johnston at garyjanej@gmail. com or to PLSO directly at office@ plso.org . Donors are requested to refrain from offering heavily used and/or outdated survey equipment and supplies, as such items have received little interest in the past. Auction items may be delivered to Gary Johnston or Aimee McAuliffe before January 17 or at the Sheraton on Wednesday, January 22 for placement at bidding tables. 3. Purchase Purchase a raffle ticket and win an amazing 104-mile jet boat tour on the Rogue River with a $500 Visa gift card! Winner does not need to be present at the Conference or be a member of PLSO. You can buy tickets online at plso.org/event-3589176. Pioneer Chapter represents PLSO each year at the NW Youth Expo at the Oregon Convention Center. Jered McGrath and Preston Abbott are shown here waiting for the 7,000 students from about 70 high schools across Oregon and Southwest Washington, that attend this event annually.
