PLSO Oregon Surveyor Nov/Dec 2019

Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org 13 2020 Annual Conference T he 2020 PLSO Conference is just around the corner and I’m excited to present this year. One of the most enjoyable benefits of being a pre- senter is meeting the folks that work tirelessly putting it all together. It doesn’t seem to matter where I speak, I always have the pleasure of working with the most passionate folks our profession has to offer. The PLSO is no exception. The PLSO website store offers two phenom- enal resources donated by two fantastic and dedicated surveyors. The Land Sur- veyor’s Guide To The Supreme Court Of Oregon Vol. 1: 1848-1892 is available to members in hard copy for $60 and the mere price of a non-descript lunch at $20 in e-format. There’s no doubt in my mind that this collection of early Oregon case law could easily retail somewhere north of $200 on the open market. The author and PLSOmember Brian Portwood spent a year compiling, editing, and analyzing this showcase of Oregon legal principles. In addition to providing vibrant maps and graphics, Portwood dove deep and broke down some 60 plus cases into their relevant judicial questions together with the answers provided by the court and the operative principles. A topically arranged index is cleverly offered as a quick reference and aid in finding rele- vant cases. This really is a “must have” for every boundary surveyor between Siskiyou Pass and the Columbia. It’s also recommended as just plain old good reading for rope stretchers in any licens- ing jurisdiction. Albert White (1926–2007) needs no in- troduction nor does his gracious gift to the PLSO, A Casebook of Oregon Dona- tion Land Claims. This work memorializes White’s passion, research, and experience with Donation Land Claims. This collec- tion of cases is not only a pillar of Oregon history, it also chronicles the foundation of the Oregon land cadastre. In practice I see this book as a local supplement to the manual of instructions. Every Oregon boundary surveyor should have two cop- ies of this gem. One to display with pride in your personal library and the other kept in your “go” bag for pawing on with dirty hands. Al White continues to give to our profession long after he closed his traverse of life. This masterpiece is also available to members at the PLSO online store for $30. That’s the price of two large pizzas in Portland. That brings us to a dedicated professional that I’ve come to know through ourmutual Jason Foose, PLS on the 2020 PLSO Annual Conference continues on page 14 T By Featured Conference Speaker Jason Foose Lectures: Wednesday, Jan 22 & Thursday, Jan 23 at 8 AM – 3 PM
