PLSO The Oregon Surveyor Sept/Oct 2020

4 Vol. 43, No. 5 The Oregon Surveyor  | Committees TransformOur Professional Community From the PLSO Office Aimee McAuliffe PLSO Exec. Secretary A s much as we talk about the Board of Directors throughout the year, the truth is PLSO’s committees are extremely valuable in organizing and ful- filling important work. Not only do they utilize a volunteers’ specific skills and in - terests, they are our boots on the ground regarding the strategic plan and bringing value to our membership. They are small enough to get real work done set out by the Board of Directors. If you are not familiar, there are two types of committees, one being ad-hoc and the other standing. Ad-hoc committees are formed to address a specific problem or issue. Once the issue has been dealt with, the ad-hoc committee disbands. An exam- ple of a PLSO ad-hoc was the Rebranding Committee. A standing committee man- ages on-going or annual projects, like the Publications Committee. Our 2020 State Chairman, Jeremy Sherer, has been focused on defining committee roles for ourmembers and our Operations Manual. The goal is to allow for easier suc- cession when transferring leadership for our members. If you are wondering why you have not ever seen the Ops Manual, then please know that there is a Member Resource pages in theMembers Only sec- tionof thewebsite that includes our Bylaws, approved policies, approved Board of Di- rectors Minutes, etc. You may find more information in the Members Only section at www.plso.org/members (please note you will have to login). With that inmind, I amhumbly asking our membership to consider joining a commit- tee. Wewouldbe lost without our folks that are participating in them now and I know they would appreciate some new ideas and energy. Below are quick descriptions of what our standing committees work on. You can be any membership level to be on a committee. Early in your career? Per- fect time to meet professional surveyors committed to their community. Contact in- formation for the chairs is located on page 27 of this magazine. Auction Co-chaired by Gary Johnston and Robert Hamman. These two organize our annual fundraiser that supports the PLSOScholar shipProgramandoutreachefforts. Activities include acquiring donations for members to bid on and selling raffle tickets. This year the committee is working on creating a Silent Auction online, including the Schol- arship and 50/50 Raffles! Awards Chaired by Dan Nelson, this committee works on getting award nominations in each year and celebrating the winners at the Annual Conference and in The Oregon Surveyor magazine. Bylaws Tends to be a committee of one that as- sists the Board of Directors to handle any proposed changes to the bylaws and en- sures that it is done properly. Brent Bacon fills this role. I am humbly asking our membership to consider joining a committee. We would be lost without our folks that are participating in them now and I know they would appreciate some new ideas and energy... The more hands on deck the better it is for everyone.
