PLSO The Oregon Surveyor January February 2021

14 The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 44, No. 1 2021 Annual Conference: Surveyor of the Year S OT Y S U R V E Y O R O F T H E Y E A R Gary L. DeJarnatt, PLS 2020 The Surveyor of the Year award is the opportunity to recognize a member of the professional community that stood out among the crowd for their contribution to PLSO and the profession. The minimum requirements that must be met to qualify for the Surveyor of the Year Award are: 1. Be a Corporate Member of PLSO for five or more years. 2. Have demonstrated a history of high competence, integrity, and professionalism. 3. Assisted qualified and interested people in advancement within the profession. 4. Career-long service to the profession. I have never seen such overwhelming support for this year’s recipient. “ A nomination for Surveyor of the Year must be submitted by more than fivemembers in good standing. It’s not uncommon for a nomination to have more than five, but I have never seen such overwhelming support for this year’s recipient,” says Dan Nelson. “The nomination form that was submitted includes 30mem - bers voicing their support. I’ve only been on the Awards Committee for a handful of years, but that is by far themost I’ve seen. This year’s recipient has far exceeded the requirements for this award, and I am pleased to announce that it has gone to Gary DeJarnatt.” Gary DeJarnatt has been licensed as a Professional Surveyor in Oregon since 1986 and has been a member of the PLSO since 1985. After serving as Central Chapter president for two years, in 2004 and 2005, he again served as president in 2019. He played an important role in the 2004 PLSO Annual Conference held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. He has been a member of the Oregon Association of County Engineers and Surveyors (OACES) since 1990. He was voted as “Surveyor of the Year” for OACES in 2006 and served as the president of OACES in 2008. After working in the industry since 1975, Gary started his own busi - ness, DeJarnatt Land Surveys, in 1987. In 1988, Gary ran for the position of Jefferson County (Oregon) Surveyor, a position he has held since 1988. Outside of work, Gary is active in his church, in Central Oregon Veteran’s Outreach, and Jefferson County Search and Rescue. He is also an American Red Cross Blood Donor. Thank you Gary, for all you’ve done for the profession! We asked Gary to answer a few questions about his career.
