PLSO The Oregon Surveyor January February 2021

6 The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 44, No. 1 From the Publications Committee Pat Gaylord, PLS Publications Committee Interim Chair PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE FROM THE FIELD NOTES I hope you enjoyed the annual confer - ence and the great job our Conference Committee did pulling together a vir - tual event for the first time! This issue of The Oregon Surveyor highlights those who were honored with awards and an overall conference wrap up. Hopefully next year we can spend time together in person. I believe, like many other side effects of COVID, this virtual event opens up many more possibilities for the future that can be combined with in person conferences. When using the Whova event app, you may have noticed that I posted on the Job Board an advertisement for a volun - teer opportunity for one of you. When I agreed to take on the chair position of the Publications Committee it was only an interim arrangement until a new chair could be found. It’s rapidly coming up on a year since I began this task and it has now become more urgent for PLSO to find a new chair and for me to step down due to other commitments. I would like to have this change completed no later than June of this year. The new model PLSO has implemented has taken a great deal of pressure off of the committee chair and the committee when it comes to publishing each issue of The Oregon Surveyor. Vanessa Salvia has been a pleasure to work with and does a great job editing, coordinating materials, and keeping us on track to publish each issue on time. The chair position now in - volves coordination with the committee and oversight of the activities, but not the actual editing and publishing activities. The committee responsibilities recently adopted by the PLSO board are summa - rized below. If you have interest in the committee chair position, I would welcome a chance to talk with you and to begin a transition process if it seems like a good fit. It’s time to hand over the reins and I look forward to hearing from you. Publication Committee Responsibilities Duties of the Publications Committee are to oversee the quarterly publication of The Oregon Surveyor magazine, the PLSO e-Newsletter, and other publications of the organization as directed by the PLSO Board. The objectives of The Oregon Sur - veyor are to provide themembership with information promoting the aims of the so - ciety and to foster a closer unity among the profession and among the geograph - ical chapters of the organization. The Publications Committee Chair will work with the magazine editor, if there is one, to oversee the publication of The Oregon Surveyor and review all submit - tals for publication for consistency with the objectives stated above. Other du - ties as directed by the Board of Directors may include: • Preparing budgets. • Communicating with the publisher. • Assisting the editor in generating story ideas, and proofreading, approving content, appearance, and layout of featured articles for rele - vance and appropriateness. • Overseeing photography, design, and artwork to be used in the publication. • Assisting all staff to meet deadlines. • Working directly with the editor and publisher to ensure publication dead - lines are met and that the established deadlines meet the needs of the orga - nization for membership renewals, conference promotion, and other important annual business activities. • The committee chair shall have the final decision on publication of any submissions. • The Publications Committee shall support the executive director in maintaining the PLSO website and ensure the website content meets the needs of the membership and the public to provide current, relative, and usable information. x The newmodel PLSO has implemented has taken a great deal of pressure off of the committee chair and the committee when it comes to publishing each issue of The Oregon Surveyor.
