PLSO The Oregon Surveyor March April 2021

21 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org The Lost Surveyor Question continues T Which lake is known for mackinaw, rainbow trout, and kokanee fishing, and is also named for a former Surveyor General of Oregon? Photo 1: Can you guess this location? A s a young child, I sat watching ice freeze in the guides of the fishing rod, sipping hot chocolate, and freezing my butt off in a boat while try - ing to catch kokanee. Little did I know I would one day be writing about the lake’s namesake, a former Surveyor General of Oregon. This lake is known for excellent mackinaw and rainbow trout fishing, but kokanee are probably the best-known fish of this popular cascade lake. Besides the fishing, this lake is well known for the af - ternoon wind, which will consistently blow you off the lake and cause an early end to your day of fishing. Just west of the southern terminus of the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, Odell Lake is a beautiful roadside attraction at the summit of the cascades on Highway 58. The lake is bordered by Willamette Pass Ski area and two great lodges for sum- mer and winter get-a-ways. If you aren’t interested in amenities, there are many camping opportunities in the area. In ad- dition to places to stay, it is surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and other popular lakes. Not to mention, it is just uphill from Salt Creek Falls, my favorite waterfall in Oregon. Odell Lake is an Oregon destina- tion in all seasons. [Photo 1 and Photo 3] The lake's namesake, William Holman Odell, was raised in Indiana and immi- grated to Oregon with his parents and 10 Photo 1: Salt Creek Falls as seen from the lower viewing area near the end of the trail.
