He thanked SDDS members for stepping up during this difficult time and thanked their spouses for being supportive. He also said he would not forget the SDDS for supporting him during his campaign for ADA president-elect. New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) President Dr. Kevin Henner spoke quickly and eloquently, starting his speech while holding up a poster of SDDS Executive Director Bernard Hackett that read “Bernie’s Place.” Dr. Henner thanked Mr. Hackett for inviting him to the event, admitting that he did not always go around carrying the poster but that he keeps a wallet-sized picture in his pocket. He congratulated the SDDS officers, especially Dr. Babak Bina, for his leadership in these difficult times. Dr. Henner spoke about the sad passing of our friend, NYSDA Executive Director Dr. Mark Feldman, who will be honored and celebrated at the upcoming NYSDA House of Delegates meeting in Saratoga Springs, NY. NYSDA has appointed a search committee that is currently leading the search for a new executive director, while Mr. Michael Hermann serves as the interim executive director. Dr. Henner discussed his proudest project as president is the association’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiative. He gave a brief legislative update along with future planned webinars to help our members. Dr. Babak Bina gave his farewell address highlighting three events that no other SDDS president ever accomplished and may never be able to do. First, he was the only president to be installed in his own basement. Second, he was the only president to stand up the entire two-hour installation for fear he would somehow disconnect his Zoom connection. Third, he was the only president to go through his whole term in office without having to set foot in the SDDS headquarters building. Dr. Bina then discussed his tough term as president when dentists had to learn how to exist both professionally and socially in a pandemic. “This virtual existence has taken a toll on our physical and mental wellbeing.” Dr. Bina then spoke about the loss this past year of some of his mentors and colleagues. He was proud of the SDDS accomplishments of providing now over a million dollars The 2022 SDDS officers are sworn in.
