NABIL TAKAHIR MOUSSA (Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery; Canada –Dalhousie Univ/Nova Scotia, 2015) Brooklyn Hospital Center DR. ALEXANDER J. SUKYS (General Practice; Tufts University School of Dental Medicine) NYU Langone WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS! to the student loan forgiveness program and the signing of the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) LLC agreement with New York County Dental Society (NYCDS). Dr. Bina then thanked the GNYDM committee along with the new GNYDM general chairman, Dr. Richard Oshrain, for putting together a great meeting under confounding circumstances. He also thanked his colleagues and his family for helping him throughout his presidency. The installing officer, Dr. Mitchell Mindlin, who is NYSDA trustee and an SDDS past president, then installed our amazingly talented 2022 officers: Librarian Curator Dr. Phyllis Merlino, Treasurer Dr. Valerie Venterina, Secretary Dr. Paul Teplitsky, Vice President Dr. Tricia QuarteySagaille, President-Elect Dr. Raymond Flagiello and SDDS President Dr. Michael Donato, Jr. They were sworn in amidst thunderous applause. Dr. Michael Donato took the stage and gave an Academy Award worthy speech. He began by relating how nice it was to see everyone in person and not just Zoom heads, even joking about seeing Dr. Paul Albicocco with pants on his lower extremities. In response, Dr. Albicocco approached the stage and, harnessing his inner Will Smith, smacked Dr. Donato across his face. Laughter filled the hall as Dr. Albicocco was escorted out of the venue only to return shortly afterward to a standing ovation. Both Dr. Albicocco and Dr. Donato should receive an Oscar for their outstanding performance. Dr. Donato, in all seriousness, continued by quoting Martin Luther King Jr., “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” He compared all our volunteers to the heart and soul of our society, for giving of themselves to the betterment of dentistry and society. He outlined his goals of bringing new dentists and residents into organized dentistry by encouraging their involvement. One way they will see some immediate benefits is by taking advantage of the SDDS Loan Forgiveness Program, which has awarded 100 dentists with a total of almost one million dollars to date. Dr. Donato expressed that he was looking forward to offering in-person courses again and said that he would extend invitations to the dental assisting programs to join our educational meetings. He also will work with NYCDS and their president, Dr. Ioanna Mentzelopoulou, and the GNYDM Organization Committee and general chair to make an even greater post-pandemic GNYDM. Dr. Donato thanked Bernard Hackett for his over 30 years with the SDDS and the SDDS staff. Dr. Donato then spoke about his mentor, Dr. Robert Seminara, who was instrumental in his growth as a dentist and orthodontist. Some important lessons he learned from Dr. Seminara were professionalism, leadership, spirituality, humility and giving back to our profession. Dr. Donato told some heartfelt stories of their days practicing together in the office and the consummate Renaissance Man that Dr. Seminara is. Afterward Dr. Donato thanked his office staff from his three practices. He then thanked his family, his daughter Nicolle, who now practices with him, his sons Matthew and Michael III, and his wife, Elaine. Dr. Donato will undoubtably lead the SDDS to the next level. Awards were presented by Dr. Donato to Dr. Sandra Scibetta for serving on the SDDS board of trustees. Dr. John McIntyre received an award for his service as chair of the SDDS liability claims committee and on the NYSDA council of liability insurance. For their exemplary service as members of the GNYDMOrganization Committee from 2019 through 2021, Drs. Lorna Flamer-Caldera and Dr. Irvind Khurana were presented with Certificate of Recognition awards. Dr. James Doundoulakis also received an award for his two years serving as general chairman of the GNYDM. An immense thank you goes to Dr. John Halikias, SDDS past president and past GNYDM general chairman, who worked diligently behind the scenes to make our regal installation possible. We would also like to thank SDDS Executive Director Mr. Bernard Hackett, along with SDDS staff Ms. Christine Terrio, Ms. Stephanie Carter and Ms. Shayo Farinre, for their peak performance and tremendous efforts for the SDDS. We appreciate their dedication. WWW.SDDSNY.ORG 3
