The Signal | September/October 2020 29 The Foundation Golf Classic marks 30 years at Convention Foundation events support families touched by work zone tragedies TheAmericanTraffic Safety Services Foundation’s annual Golf Classic Tour - nament celebrates its 30th anniversary at the 2021 Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in San Diego. Once again, it will be one of three Founda - tion events held in conjunction with the Convention. The Sporting Clays records its ninth year and the Fun Run hits its stride with its second event. The Golf Classic started in 1992 at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club in Phoenix and has been held multiple times in Texas, Florida, California, and Louisiana. But wherever it’s been held, this Foun - dation fundraiser has been popular and sells out fast. “In a world that’s been full of changes these past several months, it’s nice to have this wonderful golf tournament to look forward to,” said event co-chair Jim Stewart. “I’ve long enjoyed the annual Golf Classic and it’s exciting to be plan - ning the 30th anniversary event for a beautiful location in San Diego.” The 30th Annual Golf Classic Tourna - ment will be held at the Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul, Calif., and, as has been the case since 1998, the winning foursome will have its name engraved on the Richard A. (Dick) Nelson Memo - rial Trophy. The three events are theprimary fundrais - ers for the entire year for The Foundation. “The events are great fun and provide a wonderful way to network and interact with colleagues fromacross the country,” saidFoundationPresidentDavidKrahulec. “But the funhas a very important purpose and that is supporting families impacted by the tragedy of work zone incidents.” The annual Golf Classic Tournament provides an opportunity to have fun, build relationships, and contribute to the support of families impacted by a work zone tragedy. Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship recipient Mariela Lara received a quick golf lesson when she attended the 29th Annual Golf Classic Tournament in New Orleans in January 2020. Mariela’s father was killed in a work zone incident in 2015.
